Drapey Woven Stretch Scuba Fabric — Fluid Drape With High Stretch for Dresses & Soft Tailoring
Drapey Woven Stretch Scuba is a soft, fluid, light-to-medium-weight woven stretch fabric sold by the yard — a smooth, scuba-faced woven with high spandex content that falls and moves in a way smooth scuba knit can't. With a clean matte face, generous 12% stretch, and a graceful drape, it sews into fluid dresses, wide-leg trousers, draped blouses, and soft skirts that need give and movement rather than rigid structure — all from a single, deeply stocked bolt.
It's the drapiest, stretchiest member of our scuba family: woven, not knit, and built to flow rather than sculpt.

Why Choose Drapey Woven Stretch Scuba
- Fluid drape. Where scuba knit grips and sculpts, this woven flows — it falls in soft folds and follows the body rather than holding a rigid shape.
- High stretch. At 12% spandex it has the most give in our scuba range, so fitted-but-flowing garments stay comfortable through a full day.
- Smooth scuba face. A clean, matte, lightly substantial face that photographs and wears sophisticated.
- Lighter weight. At 210 gsm it's easier to wear in more seasons than a heavier bonded scuba.
- Deep color range. 100+ colorways — easy matching across a collection or wardrobe.
- Low-maintenance poly/spandex. Wrinkle-resistant, color-stable, and travel-friendly.
Is This the Same as Neoprene?
No. Drapey Woven Stretch Scuba is not neoprene. "Scuba" here describes a smooth, neoprene-like face — but this is a polyester/spandex woven fabric, not the closed-cell rubber foam used in wetsuits, and not a bonded double-knit either. It's light, fluid, sewable on a standard home machine, and machine-washable. If you want a soft, stretchy woven with a clean scuba face, this is it; if you need real neoprene for diving, this isn't that.
What to Know Before You Buy
Honest guidance so this is the right fabric for your project:
- It's drapey, not structured. It flows and follows — for sculpted bodycon or tight fitted covers, choose our firmer Scuba Stretch Knit instead.
- It's a woven, not a knit. Cut edges will fray, so finish seams (serge, zig-zag, or French seams).
- It runs warm. Polyester has low breathability and traps some heat — better for transitional weather than peak summer heat.
- It's heat-sensitive. The synthetic base will glaze or melt under a hot iron — use low heat and a press cloth.
- It is not neoprene. Don't use it for wetsuits or water sports.
- Want more body? For a heavier, more substantial woven stretch scuba, see our Heavy Drapey Woven Stretch Scuba.
- Order a swatch first when matching a color across a collection or event.

How to Sew Woven Stretch Scuba: Tips for Working With This Fabric
- Needle & stitch. Use a stretch or ballpoint needle (75/11) and a stretch stitch or narrow zig-zag so seams give with the fabric.
- Finish your seams. As a woven, cut edges fray — serge, zig-zag, or use French seams for a clean finish.
- Respect the stretch. Cut with the stretch running around the body, and avoid stretching the fabric as you feed it.
- Press cool. Low heat with a press cloth only — high heat will glaze or distort the surface.
- Let it hang. Hang finished garments before final hemming so the drape settles.
How to Care for Woven Stretch Scuba Fabric
- Washing: Machine wash cold on gentle with mild detergent; avoid bleach.
- Drying: Hang or lay flat to dry, or tumble dry low. It dries fast and resists wrinkling.
- Ironing: Low heat (polyester setting) with a press cloth, or steam. Never apply high heat directly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is drapey woven stretch scuba fabric? A soft, light-to-medium-weight (210 gsm) polyester/spandex woven with a smooth scuba-like face and high 12% stretch. It drapes and flows rather than sculpting, and is used for fluid dresses, soft trousers, draped blouses, and skirts. Sold by the yard.
Is this for scuba diving? No. "Scuba" describes the fabric's smooth, neoprene-like face — not diving. It's an apparel woven, with no use in diving equipment.
Is it the same as neoprene? No. It's a polyester/spandex woven named for a neoprene-like face. Real neoprene is a rubber foam for wetsuits. This is light, fluid, sewable on a home machine, and washable.
Is this a knit or a woven? A woven (twill-based) stretch fabric — not a double-knit. That's what gives it its fluid drape. Because it's woven, finish the seams to control fraying.
What is it made of? 88% polyester, 12% spandex. Woven, 210 gsm, 57/58" wide. Origin: China.
Is it stretchy? Very — at 12% spandex it has the most give in our scuba range, with comfortable recovery.
Is it good for dresses? Yes — it's a top pick for fluid dresses, wrap dresses, draped blouses, and soft skirts. For structured bodycon, choose our firmer Scuba Stretch Knit.
How is it different from the heavy version? This is the lighter, drapier one (210 gsm). Our Heavy Drapey Woven Stretch Scuba is heavier (250 gsm) with more body for structured-but-flowing garments.
Does it wrinkle? Is it breathable? It resists wrinkles and travels well. Breathability is moderate — polyester traps some heat, so it's best for transitional weather.
How do I care for it? Machine wash cold gentle, mild detergent. Hang or lay flat to dry, or tumble low. Low iron with a press cloth, or steam.
Who should buy it? Designers and home sewers making fluid dresses, soft trousers and jumpsuits, draped blouses, and skirts — anyone who wants a stretchy, drapey woven with a clean scuba face.
