A smooth, lightly stretchy poly knit satin by the yard — built to disappear inside a garment as a lining, and equally at home as a soft-faced decor fabric for runners, napkins, sashes, and styled drapery.

Knit Satin 4564 is a 100% polyester warp-knit (tricot) satin held in 55 in-stock colorways with 20,000+ yards of depth. The knit construction delivers a smooth satin face with a soft, slightly stretchy hand — a gentle two-way give that woven satins of the same weight cannot offer. It is sold and most commonly used as a lining, but the same qualities that make it a great interior — smooth low-glare face, deep color library, comfortable hand, accessible per-yard pricing — also make it a strong choice for soft-fall event decor and tabletop styling.

Applications

Apparel linings (primary use)

  • Dress linings — cocktail, eveningwear, bridal, bridesmaid
  • Skirt linings — A-line, pencil, pleated, full
  • Jacket and blazer body linings
  • Coat and outerwear linings (light to mid-weight; pair with separate interlining for warmth)
  • Trouser and pant linings; vest and waistcoat linings
  • Costume and dancewear linings — stretch supports movement
  • Bridal gown underlinings and slip layers
  • Lining for sheer or semi-sheer outer fabrics — lace, chiffon, georgette, mesh
  • Lining for stretch outer fabrics — knit give keeps the lining from restricting the face fabric

Events & decor

  • Table runners — soft face, 55 colors, easy to color-match a tablescape
  • Napkins and napkin overlays — hems cleanly, drapes softly off the table edge
  • Chair sashes and ties — knots stay supple and don't bulk up
  • Ceremony drapery, soft-fall swags, arch drapery, photo backdrops
  • Ceiling drapes and pipe-and-drape backdrops
  • Bridal sash and ribbon work
  • Photo-styling drapery and flat-lay backgrounds
  • Soft accessory and small-craft work — pillows, accent cushions, tote linings

Honest scale note: at lining weight, this is best for runners, napkins, sashes, and soft drapery — not the right pick for full floor-length banquet tablecloths used as the only covering, where a heavier 220+ gsm event satin is the more appropriate choice.

Hand & feel

Smooth and cool on the face, slightly softer on the reverse. The hand is fluid rather than crisp — the knit structure has no rigidity, so the fabric falls in soft folds and skims surfaces instead of standing away from them. Stretch reads as a quiet give, not a sport-stretch: pulled gently, it eases; released, it returns without distortion. The sheen is a soft, contained glow — closer to a pearl finish than a mirror finish — which means under flash or stage lighting it photographs without the hot-spot reflections that plague high-shine satins.

Best for / not ideal for

Best for:

  • Lining stretch outer fabrics where a woven lining would bubble or strain
  • Fitted dresses, skirts, and gowns that need to follow the body
  • Bridal interiors — slip layers, underlinings under lace or chiffon
  • Precise color matching across a bridal-party or production run (55 colors in stock)
  • Table runners, napkins, chair sashes, soft ceremony drapery, photo backdrops
  • Bridal-party event styling where lining and decor pull from the same color palette

Not ideal for:

  • Use as a structured face / outer fabric for a tailored garment — this is lining weight
  • Sharply tailored blazers and trousers where the lining should anchor the shell (use woven bemberg or poly taffeta)
  • Heavy outerwear linings needing warmth (not insulated; pair with a separate interlining)
  • Full floor-length banquet tablecloths as the sole covering — too light to sit elegantly; use a 220+ gsm event satin instead, or layer this as a runner / overlay on top
  • Upholstery — wrong construction and abrasion profile
  • High-heat ironing — polyester knit, low to medium iron only

Specifications

  • Composition: 100% Polyester
  • Construction: Warp knit (tricot) satin
  • Category: Lining-weight satin (also suited to soft decor)
  • Weight class: Standard lining weight — light enough to disappear inside a garment, substantial enough for opacity behind sheer outer fabrics
  • Stretch: Gentle two-way give from the knit structure
  • Hand: Smooth, fluid, soft on the reverse
  • Sheen: Soft, contained satin glow on the face
  • Colorways: 55 in stock
  • Stock depth: 20,000+ yards
  • Sold by the yard, no minimums. Free swatches available.

Care

  • Machine wash cold on delicate in a mesh lingerie bag, or hand wash.
  • Use a mild detergent — no bleach or optical brighteners.
  • Tumble dry low or hang to dry. Heat is the main risk to polyester knits.
  • Iron on low (polyester setting) with a press cloth. Steam is preferable to direct iron contact.
  • Do not dry clean unless the finished garment specifies it.
  • Wash deep shades separately the first time to confirm color stability.

FAQ

What is knit satin lining and how is it different from woven satin lining?
A woven satin lining (polyester taffeta or acetate) has zero stretch and a slightly crisp hand. A knit satin lining is built on a warp-knit (tricot) base — that construction adds a quiet, comfortable two-way stretch and a softer, more fluid hand. Knit is the better match for stretch outer fabrics and fitted garments; woven is the more traditional pick for sharply tailored jackets and trousers.

Can I use this as the lining for a stretch dress?
Yes — one of the strongest use cases. A woven lining inside a stretch dress is a common construction mistake; it restricts the stretch of the outer fabric and either bubbles or pulls at the seams. A knit lining moves with the face fabric and avoids that problem entirely.

Can I use it for table runners, napkins, sashes, and event decor?
Yes. The smooth face, soft hand, deep 55-color library, and accessible per-yard pricing all work in its favor for soft-fall decor: runners, napkins, sashes, ceiling drapes, ceremony drapery, photo backdrops. For full floor-length banquet tablecloths used as the sole covering, choose a heavier 220+ gsm event satin — at lining weight this fabric is better as a runner or overlay than the primary table covering.

Is poly satin breathable?
Moderately. Polyester is less breathable than natural fibers — that is a real trade-off. In return you get wrinkle resistance, colorfastness, machine washability, and a lower price per yard. For a more breathable lining at a higher price point, bemberg/cupro or silk habotai are the traditional alternatives.

Will the 55 colors match my outer fabric or my decor palette?
Many shades are designed to read closely against Zelouf's outer satin styles, but dye lots across different base fabrics will never be identical. Order free swatches in your candidate shades and confirm the match against the actual face fabric (or table linen / wedding palette) under your lighting before committing yardage.

How do you sew with knit satin lining?
Use a ballpoint or stretch needle (70/10 or 75/11). A walking foot helps. For seams, a narrow zigzag or 3-thread overlock preserves a little of the knit's stretch; straight stitch is fine on cut-on-grain pieces where the seam does not need to flex. For napkins and runners, a narrow rolled hem on a serger or a turned-and-stitched edge both finish cleanly. Press on low heat with a press cloth.
